Wind Power- a
Compelling Opportunity
CogniSim represents a unique and
compelling opportunity in Wind Power Generation Systems because of two
key considerations:
1) Wind Energy Extraction
Since power is directly related to
torque ( i.e. Power = Speed X Torque)
CogniSim's high performance sensorless torque control allows the
extraction of wind energy over a wider range of wind speed and variable
wind conditions.
While CogniSim's generic control is
applicable to many motor classes, its wind power performance is
particularly compelling when exploiting the low cost and high
reliability attributes of the induction motor, without the need for a
shaft sensor.
2) System Synergy and Integration
CogniSim's unique ability to effectively
integrate and manage complex power electronic systems is particularly
important in wind generation. The effective control of the prime
generator is accomplished with the sensorless torque control (1).
However, there is also the need to manipulate the power for effective
grid connection and, where applicable, for the number of subsystems used
when off-peak energy storage is required. The common architecture of
CogniSim facilitates synergy and performance benefits that cannot be
achieved with traditional control systems.
3) Scalability for On-Grid and
Off-Grid Wind Power
a) On-Grid Direct
Generation: CogniSim's unique architecture enables complete
power-circuit scalability, regardless of the power level of the
generator, with no change in its sensorless torque control capability.
This allows the extraction of energy over a wider range of wind
conditions. For this reason, CogniSim presents a competitive opportunity
in large On-grid wind power generation systems (e.g. multi-megawatt
systems).
b) On-Grid With Energy Storage
Capability:
In addition to direct-to-grid
applications, CogniSim's unique architecture enables a wide range of
sub-system functions to be achieved and integrated when energy storage
is a consideration. Some of the kinds of sub-systems could include
Electrolysis power supplies, Hydrogen compressor motor drives, Grid
Connect Active-Front-ends, battery chargers etc.

c) Off-Grid
The need for a grid, and the capital
cost of wind generation systems are limitations to the present
opportunities for wind power development. Eliminating the cost, complex
approval, and site limitations associated with connecting to the grid
opens up the substantial untapped opportunity of off-grid wind power
applications. CogniSim's ability to generate over a wide range of wind
conditions, while effectively using the lower cost sensorless induction
motor as the prime generator, significantly changes the economics,
thereby making midrange to smaller systems viable.
Technical
Explanation of Performance Benefits of CogniSim
One of the key capabilities of CogniSim that enables the
performance cited above is shown in the following video. This
demonstrates CogniSim's ability to do fast rotating restarts into a
spinning load, as well as, operation at very high speed in the field
weakened region.
This performance is the key to power generation in wind under
widely varying conditions. Note that the same attributes are applicable
to micro-hydro and other irregularly rotating prime movers (wave,
compressed air, diesel engines etc.).
